A Day in the Life: Corporate Volunteering

So, what does a corporate volunteering day actually involve? From the first briefing to working alongside local partner organisations, the day is designed to be practical, collaborative, and well-structured. Below is a step-by-step look at how a typical day with Serve the City’s volunteer team at the Street Kindness project unfolds.

Street Kindness

Street Kindness is a street distribution that takes place every Saturday. Volunteers come to the Serve the City office in Brussels to prepare food and other essential items before heading out to distribute these to people experiencing homelessness Brussels. Volunteers also take the time to speak to the people they help, listening to their stories and engaging in conversation, to offer a moment of connection.

9:30AM – Coffee & hellos

The day begins for our volunteers with a warm welcome. Over coffee, volunteers introduce themselves and meet their STC leaders for the day. Some have volunteered before; others are new but within minutes the group feels connected by a shared purpose. The leaders explain the plan, the route, and how to approach beneficiaries respectfully and safely!

9:45AM – Preparing with purpose

Together, the volunteers prepare sandwiches and care bags for the day, carefully packing them into bags and loading up the trolleys. Serve the City vests go on, and the team are ready to head out into the city with something tangible to offer.

10:00AM – On the streets

As the group heads towards the EU parliament conversations flow easily between volunteers, discussing shared interests and common goals during the activity. In pairs they stop to meet people along the way: offering the prepared care bags and clothing. Here the volunteers learn it’s not just about handing over supplies, it’s about pausing, listening and sharing a moment of kindness and dignity. The simple act of giving creates meaningful connections on both sides.

12:30PM – A living reminder

Reflections of the day begin as volunteers walk together, smiles are exchanged, names are learned, and stories are shared. The last bags are handed out and vests come off, signalling the resources are finished for the day. The walk feels different now – more grounded and thoughtful.

1:00PM – Refection and gratitude

After walking back to the STC office, everyone gathers for a debrief and volunteers share highlights: a reminder how human connection matters more than the items themselves. The leaders close with thanks and an invitation to join again.

The day ends not just with goodbyes, but with a sense of belonging – to the city, to one another, and to the idea that kindness, however small, can ripple far beyond a single morning.
