Serve the City Wins Citizenship Award!

SERVE THE CITY WINS CITIZENSHIP AWARD

Volunteer Work Recognized by Volonteurope

10 October 2011, Brussels, Belgium—Serve the City announced today that it has won an Active Citizens of Europe (ACE) Award for 2011. The ACE Awards are presented by Volonteurope, in partnership with Community Service Volunteers and supported by the European Commission’s ‘Europe for Citizens’ Programme. The award is given annually to outstanding volunteering NGOs and individuals in Europe. John Macdonald, Head of Task Force for the European Year of Volunteering shares his opinion on Serve the City’s strengths:

Serve the City connects people who want to ‘give something back’ to the city they are in with a meaningful opportunity to do so…The reason for this phenomenal success is their flexible approach to encouraging civic engagement through volunteering: volunteers sign up to serve in projects that fit their interests and abilities; volunteers can participate as individuals or as a group, on a one-time basis or as a regular commitment. Serve the City also makes it easy for expatriates and other non-native residents to get involved in the life of their city.

Serve the City is a movement of volunteers around the world connecting with local opportunities to serve in our cities. Many people want to get involved in the community and help in some way, but it’s hard to know where to start or if the simple things we might do would make a difference. Serve the City organizes events where volunteers can start by showing kindness in practical ways to people in need, believing that many people doing small things together can make a big difference. “Thank you to all of the volunteers who have been involved with Serve the City; this award recognizes how doing many small things together makes a big difference,” says Carlton Deal, Founder and Director of Serve the City. “We hope that active citizens around Europe will join us in crossing the line to serve and get to know not only the needs, but also the names, of the people on the other side.” Serve the City began in Brussels in 2005, and is now active in 70 cities around the world. Serve the City organizes serving events and provides ongoing serving opportunities. Volunteers sign up to serve in projects that fit their interests and abilities. Volunteers can participate as individuals or as a group, on a one-time basis or as a regular commitment.
