15th annual Big Volunteer Week

In the first week of July 2019, Serve the City Brussels held its annual Big Volunteer week. This year we were celebrating our 15th anniversary, thus making the week of June 28th through July 5th even more special. During the week we had an average of 130 volunteers per day who participated in 16 different projects around Brussels. Amongst which, we helped renovating a center where people in transition stay at, we have distributed sandwiches to the homeless in Brussels, we have played football with Refugees staying at Parc Maximilian, spent some quality time in elderly residences, but more importantly, we spread kindness for 6 days straight in our community. At Parc Maximilian alone, we served about 3000 sandwiches, distributed 175kg of Bananas, 100 kg of oranges, and over 500 liters of water. However, other projects, such as sorting clothes at a donation center, were just as challenging.

Through Serve the City’s vision of help service and values that were individually discussed on daily basis, our volunteers had a wonderful experience. In a survey we sent out throughout the week, one of our volunteers wrote “I really liked being able to help an organization that does a very nice job of entertainment for children and handicap people, and that only has one person to keep the immense green areas in good condition”. Our team worked effortlessly to ensure the variety of projects offered and gave an opportunity to all volunteers to participate in a project of their interest and preference. Another volunteer wrote in the feedback survey, “The volunteers, beneficiaries, and staff were all incredibly engaged and enthusiastic. The whole STC team had a contagious energy that rippled to everyone in attendance, no matter who they were or what project they were set to tackle on that particular day.”

Kindness Starts with you because we believe that many people doing small things together can make a big difference.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our 15th annual Big Volunteer Week and we hope to see you again next year.
