Big Volunteer Week – People who are Elderly

Another Big Volunteer Week on the way! We are getting ready for yet another wonderful Big Volunteer Week! This year, it will centre around the six groups of need in the city on which Serve the City focuses, namely: people who are homeless, people who are asylum seekers, people who are elderly, people with disabilities, children in need, victims of abuse. This week we will talk about the people who are elderly. We are all ageing and we all hope to live long lives, but the later years can be one of the loneliest seasons of a person’s life. In Belgium, people over the age of 65 years are encouraged to remain independent. This means that by the time they move to an elderly home, they are often frail, lonely, and no longer in a position to take care of themselves. Conversations, simple games, music, and arts and crafts stimulate their minds and warm their hearts. There are numerous activities senior citizens can do in Brussels, where they can meet like-minded people and enjoy their time together. There are, of course, elderly homes that provide 24 hour care, but for those who can still be independent and care for themselves, life can get a bit depressing and lonely at times. Serve the City’s volunteers try to reach out to as many elderly people as possible. As they live on their own, their life can get quite lonely at times. Having a person visit them from time to time just to talk makes a big difference, as sometimes our volunteers are the only people with whom they interact in a long period of time. What’s more, visiting them on a regular basis to listen to music together or do an interactive activity like arts and crafts improves their quality of life and state of mind tremendously.
