Every Tuesday in December 2020, we will present one of our projects. Today, Anne, Marie and Frank talk about our beloved project Le Phare, one of the oldest projects at Serve the City. Click here to know more about Giving Tuesday.
Every week, volunteers get together at project Le Phare to prepare a healthy three course home-cooked meal, with fresh fruits, vegetables, and a homemade desert. Throughout the years, the project has made a big difference in the lives of the people it serves. Le Phare is not only a safe place for people to get something to eat, it’s also a place where people get to know each other and share. “They know us, and we know them, not only by their needs but by their names. The interaction with them is precious, not only by handing them out a healthy meal, but also getting to know them, forming a friendship with people who are struggling, many of whom live on the streets” says Marie, who was the project leader at Le Phare for almost 6 years.
Project Le Phare could not exist without the help of the Salvation Army and Holy Trinity. Indeed, when Ann started out at Le Phare, she was cooking for around 30 people a week. Today, the project serves around 140 meals every week. To cope with this increasing number, Holy Trinity are helping us with their community kitchen project. “They now cook the hot meals in their professional-sized kitchen and bring them to Le Phare, for us to give out. It’s great teamwork.”
Le Phare was also impacted by the covid-19 pandemic. However, the project adapted quickly and decided to hand out lunch bags instead of serving the meals in the canteen of the Salvation Army. The lunch bags contain the same as before: a warm meal, sandwiches, fresh fruits and desert. “We noticed that due to the covid-19 pandemic, there was a growing and urgent need to do more. We decided to extend our project, and it now takes place every Tuesday and Friday” says Frank, from the Salvation Army.
